5VIRTUES
About
Technology Leadership, Built on 25 years in the Executive Seat and Five Core Virtues.
Before founding 5VIRTUES, I served as CIO and CTO for growing and established companies, including LuLaRoe and St. John Knits, leading technology through the exact kind of growth, complexity, and leadership gaps our clients are facing now. That experience sits behind every engagement: we're not guessing at what a growing company needs from its technology leadership; we've run it.
We approach every engagement not as a project but as an ongoing leadership partnership grounded in the five virtues for which the practice is named: Integrity, Wisdom, Diligence, Agility, and Stewardship. They're not a slogan. That's how we operate: honest assessment before recommendation, patient enough to build lasting capability rather than quick fixes, and disciplined enough to leave your team stronger than we found it.
Our Strategic Services
Intro
You've outgrown the help you started with.
5VIRTUES is a Fractional and Interim CIO/CTO practice built for founder-led and growing companies where technology leadership hasn't kept pace with the business. We assess what's actually going on, stabilize what's fragile, and build a team that no longer needs us.
25 years leading technology at companies from $10M to $500M in revenue as CIO, CTO, and now as a fractional partner for leadership teams facing the same gap.
Fractional and Interim CIO/CTO: Technology Leadership & Stabilization
Executive technology leadership, without the full-time hire or the full-time risk.
Most technology problems aren't technology problems. They're leadership gaps: a team running on one person's knowledge, a roadmap that exists only in someone's head, decisions getting made reactively instead of strategically. We step in as your Fractional or Interim CIO/CTO to give the business what it's missing: senior, accountable technology leadership that reports to you, not around you.
Our approach follows a clear arc: assess, stabilize, restructure, install the right leadership. We don't start with a fix. We start by understanding what's actually broken, what's at risk, and what the business needs before we recommend anything.
Every recommendation is weighed against the same four questions: does it drive revenue, reduce cost, optimize assets, or reduce risk? Never technology for its own sake.
In practice:
- Available as a fractional engagement of one to three days a week, or as full-time interim CIO/CTO bridging a departure or a permanent search
- Stalled initiatives diagnosed and restarted, including ERP, commerce, and supply chain programs that have quietly stopped moving
- Executive-level ownership of technology strategy and execution
- Direct partnership with your leadership team, not a report that sits in a drawer
- A structured path from "barely holding together" to a system and team that can run without constant intervention
- Engagement scoped to the business's actual size and need, typically several days a week, not a full-time seat
IT Risk & Key Dependency Assessment
Transferable Technology Assessment
Technology that transfers is worth more than technology that works.
A buyer, a lender, or an incoming partner does not evaluate whether your technology runs. They evaluate whether it runs without you. Undocumented systems, single-person dependencies, unclear vendor and license ownership, and security gaps all surface in diligence, and they surface late, when your leverage is lowest.
This is a fixed-scope assessment across seven domains, mapped to what a buyer actually examines. You get a plain-language readiness picture, a prioritized remediation plan, and a set of deliverables that doubles as a diligence binder.
It works two ways. If you have a sale or succession horizon, it protects value before anyone is looking. If you don't, the same findings are simply a list of things that make the business easier to run and grow.
In practice:
- Seven-domain readiness review across systems, data, security, vendors, documentation, team, and spend
- A prioritized remediation plan with owners and sequence, not a findings dump
- Documentation packaged so it stands up to buy-side or lender review
- Fixed scope and fixed fee, so the cost is known before we start
Team & Leadership Development
We measure success by how little you need us when we're done.
Most technology consultants are incentivized to make themselves indispensable. We're not. Our job is to leave your internal team stronger, more capable, and fully able to run the function on their own because a fractional leader who never leaves isn't a fix; it's a new dependency.
We work directly with your existing technology leaders, coaching, mentoring, and providing them with the exposure and structure they need to grow into the role the business requires. That might mean developing a strong technologist into a confident leader, or helping an internal team build the habits and processes that outlast any single person.
In practice:
- One-on-one coaching and mentorship for internal technology leaders
- Structured facilitation sessions to align the team around priorities and ownership
- A deliberate handoff plan built in from day one, not an afterthought at the end
AI Strategy & Governance
Once the foundation is solid, AI becomes a real advantage, not a distraction.
We don't lead with AI, and we don't recommend our clients do either. Deploying AI on top of an unstable technology foundation just moves the risk around faster. Once the fundamentals are in place clean systems, a capable team, clear priorities. AI strategy becomes a genuine force multiplier, and we help you approach it the same way we approach everything else: deliberately, with a clear business case, not because it's trending.
Backed by graduate-level training in Generative AI Leadership and Strategy, we help leadership teams cut through the noise and identify where AI actually moves the needle for their business: revenue, cost, risk, or asset efficiency.
In practice:
- AI readiness assessment, grounded in your actual technology and team maturity
- Practical roadmap tied to business outcomes, not tool adoption for its own sake
- Governance and risk guardrails so AI initiatives don't outrun oversight
Technology Stack & Security Optimization
A technology stack and security posture that support the business, not put it at risk.
Fast-growing companies accumulate technology the way they accumulate everything else under pressure: quickly and with little time to check whether it still fits. Redundant tools, unclear vendor contracts, and security gaps that nobody's had the bandwidth to look at closely all carry real costs in wasted spend, exposure, and the confidence customers and partners place in you.
We audit what you have, identify what's redundant or misaligned with where the business is headed, and prioritize the security gaps that actually matter not a compliance checklist for its own sake, but the handful of issues that would genuinely hurt if left alone.
In practice:
- Full audit of your current technology stack and vendor relationships
- Consolidation recommendations tied to cost and operational fit, not just cost alone
- Security posture review, prioritized by real business risk, not a generic checklist
Additional Support: Fractional PMO

Let's Talk About Where Your Technology Leadership Stands.
Every engagement starts with a conversation, not a sales pitch or a canned assessment. We'll talk through what's changed in your business that's made this urgent, where the real risk sits, and whether a fractional or interim CIO/CTO is the right fit; no obligation, no generic template.
